Three Chinese citizens attempted to illegally acquire two kilograms of uranium and were detained in Tbilisi, LETA reports, citing AP.
In the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, three Chinese citizens were detained while attempting to illegally purchase two kilograms of uranium, the State Security Service announced on Saturday, also releasing a video recording of the operation.
According to the security service, the suspects planned to transport the nuclear material to China via Russia, the statement said, noting that the criminal group intended to pay $400,000 (344,000 euros) for the radioactive material.
According to authorities, one of the Chinese citizens, who was already in Georgia and violating visa conditions, brought in experts to search for uranium throughout the country.
Other members of the criminal group coordinated the operation from China, the statement said.
The suspects were identified and detained while discussing the details of the illegal deal, the security service indicated.
The agency did not specify when the arrests were made and did not disclose the identities of those detained.
