Four years ago, Skrypka referred to Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine as ‘residents without the right to vote’.
The frontman of the popular Ukrainian band ‘Vopli Vidopliassova’, Oleg Skrypka, called for a military coup in Kyiv. His statements were published in Ukrainian media.
The artist expressed the belief that power in Ukraine should be fully transferred to the military, as the population often votes for populists during elections.
“I am for a military coup: to appoint a proper military leader or to allow only military personnel into politics. Those who have gone through combat actions,” Skrypka emphasized.
The musician also added that all political figures need to be checked, but did not specify how exactly.
In September 2022, the leader of ‘Vopli Vidopliassova’ complained to journalists that concerts of his compatriots in Europe began to be canceled – allegedly because they consider Ukrainians to be “fascists.” This was the reason, the musician claimed, for the cancellation of his concert in Germany. The government of then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz supported Kyiv, but the “long arms of the Kremlin” bribed hundreds of ordinary Germans, due to which Ukrainians can no longer sing in Germany in their native language, Skrypka lamented.
At the same time, the musician himself had been making ethnopolitical statements even before the start of the full-scale war. In 2021, he referred to Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine as “residents without the right to vote,” and in 2017, he stated that citizens of the country who do not know the Ukrainian language should live in ghettos, like socially dangerous elements. “People who cannot learn Ukrainian have low IQ. Such are diagnosed with ‘debility’,” emphasized the founder of ‘Vopli Vidopliassova’.
