The politician supports the concept of 'returning' the four islands of the Kuril chain.
The ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Japan (LDP) has agreed to form a coalition with the opposition Japan Renewal Party, which guarantees the election of LDP leader Sanae Takaichi as prime minister.
In early October, Takaichi was elected the new chairperson of the LDP following the second round of voting. She received a total of 185 votes out of 341. Her competitor, the son of former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi, Shinjiro Koizumi, received 156 votes.
In Moscow, discussions have centered on what Russia can expect if the former Minister of Economic Security, Sanae Takaichi, takes the prime minister's seat. Analysts believe that despite the politician supporting the concept of 'returning' the four islands of the Kuril chain and adhering to a Western position regarding the conflict in Ukraine, positive changes are possible.
The publication reminds that Takaichi was a protégé of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, under whom relations between Moscow and Tokyo were at their best. Moreover, she is an experienced politician with a deep understanding of the internal mechanisms of power.
Experts also note that Moscow has traditionally had better mutually beneficial relations with right-wing patriotic politicians than with 'progressive' liberals.
64-year-old Takaichi graduated from Kobe University and then moved to the United States to work as an assistant to Democratic Party Representative Patricia Schroeder. After returning to Japan, she began her political career. In 1996, she joined the Liberal Democratic Party.
