The Bundestag, the lower house of Germany's parliament, on Thursday passed an amendment to the law that will allow police across the country to use Taser stun devices, reports LETA citing DPA.

The new law explicitly permits the use of Tasers alongside standard batons and firearms.

The Taser is used from a distance and causes painful muscle contractions, temporarily incapacitating the target.

"The Taser provides police with an effective and proportionate way to respond to dangerous situations," said State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior Christoph de Vries.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced plans to purchase 10,000 Tasers in the coming years.

At the same time, these devices are viewed ambivalently, as they may pose health risks, particularly for individuals with heart or circulatory problems.
