The reason for the tightening is not a love for pets, but rabies.

The governor of the Indonesian capital, Pramodjo Anung Wibowo, announced plans to introduce a ban on the sale of dog and cat meat for consumption. The decision was announced after a meeting with representatives of the animal rights organization Dog Meat Free Indonesia (DMFI), reports Antara.

As the governor explained, the ban will be part of measures to curb the spread of rabies in the city. A special gubernatorial decree will be issued for its implementation, and if necessary, a regional regulatory act will be developed for consideration by the city council.

Wibowo emphasized that the legal basis for the ban is already provided by existing laws — No. 18 on food and No. 41 on agriculture and animal health. "I hope Jakarta can set an example in this initiative," the governor stated.

DMFI representatives supported the initiative, noting that the trade in dog meat in Jakarta has reached a critical level and contributes to the spread of rabies. The organization's veterinarian, Mary Fernandez, called the situation "alarming" and requiring immediate action. If the ban is adopted, Jakarta will become the first region in Indonesia to officially prohibit the consumption of dog and cat meat.

Two years ago, an official ban on dog meat was developed in South Korea. It affected the food service industry as well as places where the product could be bought and sold. In recent years, this practice has faced criticism from both the international community and the younger generation of the country. This ban came into effect on January 9, 2024.

Violators will face penalties: for breeding and killing dogs, they will be punished with three years in prison or a fine of 30 million won (about $21,000). The sale, storage, and distribution of dog meat, as well as the operation of restaurants, carry a penalty of two years in prison or a fine of 20 million won (about $13,900). However, according to the law, penalties for this will only begin in 2027. During this time, all dog meat shops, farms, and restaurants must register and gradually cease their activities.
