The State Prosecutor's Office of Estonia punished a local resident who made donations to a Russian organization by forcing him to pay a significant amount to the Ukrainian center. This was reported by ERR.
In 2022, a crypto investor, whose name is not disclosed, donated funds three times to an organization that procures equipment for Russian military personnel fighting in Ukraine.
The crypto investor, located in Estonia, made three payments of 0.0008 bitcoin from his account on the Binance cryptocurrency exchange. Due to fluctuations in the exchange rate, the amounts of the transfers on different dates were 23.30 euros, 15.20 euros, and 16.10 euros, totaling 54.60 euros.
Assistant State Prosecutor Margaret Beres decided that in this case, it was possible to apply an opportunity – a measure that allows for the termination of a criminal case without court if the suspect fulfills certain conditions.
The investor agreed to donate to a Ukrainian charity an amount 30 times greater than his transfers to support the Russian army, which is 1,638 euros.
The prosecution randomly selected the recipient of the donation – it became the non-profit organization "Ukrainian Cultural Center" operating in Tallinn. Additionally, the crypto investor faces 75 hours of community service over the next six months.
According to Beres, if the suspect fails to fulfill these obligations, the prosecution will resume criminal proceedings.
