Russia is trying to sow chaos and exert psychological pressure on Ukrainians by striking energy and railway infrastructure in Ukraine, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to LETA citing DPA.
In recent weeks, Russia has intensified airstrikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and railway network. Moscow acted similarly in previous years ahead of the winter season.
Zelensky noted that the Russian strikes are already putting significant pressure on Ukraine's gas infrastructure and warned that as this pressure increases, Ukraine may have to increase gas imports.
Ukraine has also recently ramped up drone and missile strikes on Russian territory, and Zelensky stated that this campaign is yielding results and has led to rising fuel prices in Russia. "We believe that as a result of our strikes, they have lost up to 20% of their fuel supplies," the president said, adding that there is evidence that Russia has increased imports from China and Belarus.
Recently, Ukraine also struck a power plant in the Belgorod region of Russia, which borders Ukraine, causing power outages.
