In the center of the Spanish capital, Madrid, four people died on Tuesday as a result of the collapse of a building that was under reconstruction, authorities reported, according to LETA citing AFP.
According to emergency services, among the deceased are three men who were working at the construction site and a woman who was supervising the project. Spanish media reports that the workers were from Mali, Guinea, and Ecuador.
Three more people sustained minor injuries.
An investigation into the causes of the collapse is currently underway. The former office building was being converted into a hotel. According to city council documents, permission for the project was granted in February. According to the land registry, the building had six floors and a total area of 6,745 square meters.
The disaster occurred near the popular tourist destination Plaza Mayor.
"Different floors of the building collapsed down to the basement," said Francisco Martin Aguirre, a representative of the central government in the Madrid region, to reporters.
"The destruction is very serious, and an analysis of the possible impact on neighboring buildings is also being conducted," he added.
Madrid police reported that residents of nearby houses were evacuated.
