"On October 1, we were informed about the planned changes in the security arrangements for Tikhanovskaya in Lithuania. I wish this decision had been announced a little earlier. Since the time frame after the notification was very short, we did not have enough time to adapt the office's activities to these changes. As a result, we had to temporarily suspend the office's work," he said.

According to the advisor, at a meeting between the office representatives and Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys after receiving the notification, the aforementioned changes were clarified and assurances were given that "Lithuania's attitude towards the regime (of the authoritarian president of Belarus – BNS) of Alexander Lukashenko remains unchanged," and that "Tikhanovskaya remains an official guest of the Lithuanian government, and no changes in her status are expected."

Kuchinski stated that the security of Tikhanovskaya and her team is "vital not only for her safety but also for the continued functional operation of the Representation of Belarusian Democracy abroad."

He assured that the bureau is seriously concerned about the ongoing and emerging new threats related to the continuing campaign of intimidation, repression, and attempts by Lukashenko's regime to undermine the democratic forces of Belarus and intimidate the foreign community.

LRT reported on Tuesday that due to the reduction of physical security, Tikhanovskaya's protection from the State Protection Service (SPS) is being transferred to the Criminal Police Bureau, which provides protection not at the level of a head of state, but as a person who may objectively face certain threats.

The leader of the Belarusian opposition, Tikhanovskaya, has been under round-the-clock protection from SPS officers since her arrival in Lithuania in 2020.

Chairman of the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs Remigijus Motuzas stated that the level of physical security for the leader of the Belarusian opposition has been reduced considering the changed threat assessment.
