A new virus is raging in China. Will it reach Europe?

Over 3,000 new cases of chikungunya fever were identified in southern China in one week.

China has reported three thousand new cases of chikungunya virus in the southern province of Guangdong.

Infected individuals were identified between September 28 and October 4. Most cases were recorded in the city of Jiangmen. A third-level health response has been implemented there.

Chikungunya fever is transmitted to humans through bites from infected mosquitoes; it cannot be transmitted from person to person. Symptoms include a sudden rise in temperature up to 40 degrees Celsius, headaches, severe joint and muscle pain, nausea, weakness, and rash.

It was previously reported that the strongest outbreak of chikungunya fever in the last 20 years has been recorded in Sri Lanka. In Russia, the disease was identified in two tourists returning from vacation.
