On hot days, many people throw open their windows, hoping to let fresh air into their homes. However, specialists warn: this habit can make the living space even more stuffy and hot. Experts explained when and how to properly ventilate an apartment during the summer heat.
Every summer, when the temperature rises above +30 degrees, residents of apartments and houses face the same question: should they keep the windows open or, on the contrary, close them to maintain coolness inside the room.
As reported by the Polish publication Fakt, journalists turned to doctors, meteorologists, energy efficiency specialists, and building physicists for clarification.
According to experts, the common practice of keeping windows open during the hottest hours of the day does not always bring benefits. If the temperature outside reaches +35 degrees or higher, hot air quickly penetrates the room, heating it even more.
However, completely giving up ventilation is also not advisable. A lack of fresh air can lead to increased humidity, a feeling of stuffiness, and a deterioration in the well-being of residents.
Specialists advise paying attention primarily to the timing of ventilation. It is most effective to open windows early in the morning, while the air has not yet had a chance to warm up, as well as in the evening and at night after sunset.
During the daytime, especially if the windows face the sunny side, it is better to keep them closed and, if possible, use thick curtains, blinds, or other means of protection from sunlight.
Experts emphasize that there is no universal solution for all rooms. Much depends on the location of the apartment, the level of humidity, and the temperature of the air both inside and outside.
The main rule in the heat is not the number of ventilations, but their proper timing. To keep the house cool while ensuring a flow of fresh air, specialists recommend opening windows in the morning and evening, and keeping them closed during the hottest hours of the day. This approach will help make the living space more comfortable even during extreme heat.
