Is your washing machine starting to 'jump' around the bathroom? Experts explain why this is dangerous

A small vibration during the spin cycle is considered normal for a washing machine. But if the appliance starts banging loudly, shaking violently, or literally 'running away' from its place, this may indicate serious problems. Appliance specialists explained what mistakes most often cause strong vibrations and why ignoring such signals is dangerous.

Where the imbalance hides

As the publication Martha Stewart writes, excessive vibration of a washing machine almost always indicates a balance issue. This can be either mechanical or domestic. Expert Dennis Godinyuk notes that there is no need to panic and think about a breakdown right away: very often the cause is unevenly distributed laundry. When heavy items (such as large towels, blankets, or pillows) bunch up on one side of the drum, a powerful centrifugal imbalance occurs at high speeds.

How to restore balance to your washing machine

In most cases, the problem of noise and shaking can be solved on your own in a few minutes:

  • If the machine starts banging loudly, stop the cycle, drain the water, open the door, and manually redistribute bulky items in the drum.

  • Over time, due to constant loads, the leg fastenings may loosen. Use a level to ensure that all four legs are firmly touching the floor.

  • Special rubber pads or mats under the legs effectively dampen vibrations, prevent the machine from sliding on slippery tiles, and protect the floor from scratches.

Technical malfunctions that make the machine 'dance'

If the items are evenly distributed and the legs are level, but the washing machine still shakes violently, the problem lies inside. Specialists highlight several components that most often fail:

  • Shock absorbers and suspension springs hold the drum and should dampen vibrations. When they wear out, the drum loses balance and starts banging against the casing.

  • The dampers' rods break due to regular overloading of the machine.

  • The drum bearings and shafts wear out, accompanied by shaking and a characteristic metallic rumble or squeak during the spin cycle.

Why strong shaking should not be ignored

Many people ignore the noise or hold the washing machine with their hands during the spin cycle. Experts warn: such carelessness can be costly. Constant strong impacts and vibrations accelerate premature wear of all internal components and electronics. This will lead to internal damage, system depressurization, large water leaks, and hidden rust formation. Therefore, instead of a cheap repair, you will have to buy a new washing machine.

In the editorial's opinion, strong vibration of a washing machine is not just a household inconvenience, but a warning of a potential malfunction. In many cases, the problem can indeed be solved independently — it is enough to properly distribute the laundry or check the level of the appliance installation. However, constant noise and shaking can quickly render the machine inoperable and lead to expensive repairs or complete replacement of the appliance.
