Scientists Discover Link Between Minerals in the Body and Pancreatic Diseases

A large-scale study showed that the levels of certain trace elements may influence the risk of developing pancreatic diseases.

The risk of developing pancreatic diseases may depend on the concentration of several minerals in the body, according to a study published in the journal "Frontiers in Nutrition."

The authors of the study analyzed data from about 192,000 participants from the UK Biobank, who were monitored for an average of 13 years. The analysis revealed that elevated levels of selenium and iodine were associated with an increased likelihood of developing pancreatic cancer.

At the same time, other trace elements showed an opposite relationship with diseases: higher levels of magnesium, copper, and manganese were associated with a reduced risk of acute pancreatitis.

The researchers also noted that the impact of trace elements is not the same for all groups of people. The link between selenium and iodine, as well as cancer risks, was more pronounced in women, older participants, and smokers.

Scientists believe that a proper balance of trace elements in the body is important for pancreatic health. The opinion of the bb.lv editorial team: taking supplements independently without a doctor's recommendation is not advisable, as excess of certain substances can also be associated with increased health risks.
