“Natural” Doesn’t Mean Safe: Doctor Explains the Risks of Deodorants

Natural deodorants are often perceived as a safer alternative to conventional products; however, experts warn that such products can cause irritation and are not suitable for everyone.

What’s the Problem with “Natural” Products

Dermatologist Divya Shokin notes that she regularly encounters reactions to such products in her practice.

"I actually see allergies to natural deodorant almost every day in my office," she says.

According to the doctor, the absence of aluminum, parabens, and phthalates does not automatically make a product safe. Natural ingredients can also cause negative skin reactions.

"They are usually made from natural substances, but 'natural' is not the same. Let’s be clear that poison ivy is a 'natural' material, but you shouldn’t rub it on yourself," the specialist explains.

Which Ingredients Can Be Harmful

One common cause of irritation is baking soda, which is used to neutralize odor. Due to its alkaline nature, it can disrupt the skin’s natural pH and cause discomfort.

Additionally, essential oils and fragrances can be potentially irritating, especially for people with sensitive skin.

Why the Effect May Be Weaker

It is important to note that natural deodorants are not antiperspirants. They do not block sweating; they only mask the odor.

This means that moisture remains, and in hot weather or during physical activity, the odor may become more pronounced.

How to Choose a Product

Experts advise focusing not on the label "natural," but on the individual reaction of the skin. Even products without baking soda or aggressive components may not be suitable.

The main criterion for choice is comfort and the absence of irritation. If a product causes unpleasant sensations, it is better to abandon it and find a more suitable option.
