Earplugs Under Question: Doctor Discusses Hidden Risks

Earplugs have long been considered a simple and effective way to protect against noise during sleep. However, according to specialists, their regular use may have non-obvious consequences for ear health and even affect overall well-being.

What Risks Are Associated with Earplugs

Otolaryngologist Hamida Jalilyan warns that any intervention in the ear canal carries potential risks.

"Every time you insert something into the ear canal, there is always a chance that something could go wrong," the doctor notes.

One common issue is the displacement of earwax. Earplugs can push it deeper into the ear canal, causing blockage and discomfort.

Additionally, there is a risk of developing infections. Earplugs retain heat and moisture, creating a favorable environment for bacteria and fungi.

Irritation and skin damage are also possible. The ear canal is very sensitive, so frequent use or a rough surface of earplugs can lead to microtraumas and contact dermatitis.

How to Use Earplugs Safely

To reduce potential risks, it is important to follow simple rules.

Earplugs should be clean and specifically designed for sleeping. This is especially important for those who sleep on their sides—soft and low-profile models reduce pressure on the ear.

Experts also recommend inserting earplugs carefully, not using them with wet ears, and regularly replacing disposable models.

If irritation or discomfort occurs from their use, it is better to refrain from using them.

Types of Earplugs

Different types of earplugs vary in comfort and noise protection levels.

Foam models provide strong noise cancellation but can amplify internal sounds and sometimes irritate the skin.

Silicone earplugs are softer and more comfortable but do not always fully block noise and may shift during sleep.

Wax models are placed at the entrance of the ear and are suitable for side sleeping; however, they can sometimes leave residue or change shape.

Despite their convenience, earplugs require careful and attentive use. Doctors emphasize that with the right approach, they are safe, but with regular and improper use, they can lead to hearing problems and ear conditions.
