In recent years, train travel has been increasingly popularized around the world. And when the view outside the window is pleasing to the eye during such a journey, it can even become the main goal of the trip.
The team at the travel insurance company InsureandGo has identified the most picturesque train routes in the world using so-called eye-tracking technology. As part of the study, respondents were shown numerous images of iconic views from train routes around the globe. Analysts then tracked how much time people spent looking at the landscapes and how quickly their gaze was drawn to them. This data was combined into a weighted "attractiveness score," assigning each route a rating from 1 to 100. Ultimately, the ranking was topped by Japan's "Romantic Sagano Train."
Why the Train in Japan is the Most Beautiful Train Route in the World
Japan's "Romantic Sagano Train," which passes by the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto, received an impressive rating of 91.9 out of 100. This short 25-minute ride along the Hozu River offers tourists some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Asia, with coastal cliffs and mountain views. The route runs between Saga-Arashiyama and Kameoka, and with open-air cars providing excellent views, it's hard to take your eyes off it. Moreover, this train is so popular that tickets need to be purchased in advance, as they sell out quickly, especially in spring during cherry blossom season and in autumn when the maples turn shades of red and gold.
