How much can you drink without harming your figure — and is there such a norm

The harm of alcohol is usually discussed in the context of the liver, heart, or nervous system. But there is another effect that is thought about less often — its influence on the figure. Moreover, it’s not just about extra calories, but about where exactly in the body fat is deposited.

Why it’s not just about calories

It seems logical: alcohol is caloric — therefore, it leads to weight gain. But research shows that it’s a bit more complicated.

Even with moderate consumption, alcohol can contribute to the accumulation of visceral fat — the kind that is deposited deep in the abdominal area.

This type of fat is considered the most dangerous because it is associated with:

  • cardiovascular diseases
  • diabetes
  • metabolic disorders

At the same time, a person may appear slim, but "hidden" fat is already accumulating inside.

What the research showed

In a large study conducted in the UK, data from nearly 6,000 people were analyzed. Participants reported how much alcohol they consumed weekly, and researchers compared this data with levels of visceral fat.

The basis was conditional units:

  • 1 unit = 8 g of pure alcohol

Minimum consumption — up to 4 units per week. Maximum — dozens of units (up to 98 for men, up to 50 for women).

If we translate this into familiar numbers, it turns out:

  • about one drink a day — that’s already about 17 units a week

And it was from this level that noticeable changes began.

How the body changes

The more a person drank, the higher the proportion of visceral fat.

The difference turned out to be quite significant:

  • for men — about 13.5% more
  • for women — up to 17% more

Moreover, the effect was observed even in those who were not overweight.

This indicates that alcohol affects not only body mass but also fat distribution.

Why the "beer belly" appears

Alcohol affects metabolism:

  • slows down fat burning
  • stimulates appetite
  • alters hormonal balance

As a result, the body more often "stores" energy in the abdominal area. And this happens even with relatively small doses.

Is there a safe dose

Formally, "moderate" consumption exists. But when it comes to figure and metabolic health, research increasingly shows:

even small regular doses can already affect the body.

So it’s not about how much you drank at one time, but about the habit of drinking regularly.

The main point

Alcohol affects the figure less obviously than it seems. It may not immediately reflect on the scales, but gradually change body composition — increasing the proportion of the most dangerous fat.

Therefore, if the goal is to maintain shape and health, it is important to consider not only calories but also the very fact of regular consumption.
