The Secret of the World's Best City for Foodies in 2026 Revealed

Tokyo has been recognized as the best gastronomic destination in the world in a new study. The city offers a unique combination of Michelin-starred restaurants, street food, and accessible formats.

Tokyo has officially been named the best gastronomic city in the world according to a new international study.

The Japanese capital surpassed classic Paris and its sister city Osaka in the rankings. The key to victory is its incredible diversity: from legendary sushi bars and Michelin-starred establishments to affordable noodle shops and world-famous convenience stores.

The study by SIXT considered several key factors. Experts analyzed data from The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, the concentration of Michelin-starred venues, tourist reviews, and the overall number of gastronomic attractions.

Tokyo boasts around 160 Michelin-starred restaurants, a world record. However, the city's gastronomy is not limited to fine dining. Street formats like yakitori and even snacks from convenience stores that have gone viral on social media have also become its hallmark.

Paris, which took second place, retains its title as the best gastronomic destination in Europe. Its strength lies in centuries-old traditions, historic bistros, and 131 Michelin-starred restaurants. Third place went to Osaka, Japan, known as the "kitchen of the nation" for dishes like takoyaki.

Experts also remind that a trip to Japan is not just about food, but also about attractions.

The top ten includes the Samurai and Ninja Museum in Kyoto, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, the ancient Eikando and Todai-ji temples, the sacred Mount Fuji, the digital TeamLab Planets museum in Tokyo, the vermilion gates of Fushimi Inari, the Hakone Open-Air Museum, the Sanjusangendo Temple, and the majestic Himeji Castle.
