Support for the Pancreas: Which Spices to Add to Your Diet

Impairment of pancreatic function, whether chronic pancreatitis, enzyme deficiency, or other conditions, significantly reduces quality of life, requiring constant medical supervision. But can the organ be helped without medications?

Enzyme preparations (for example, pancreatin) are medications that contain specific doses of lipase, amylase, and proteases. Their purpose is to directly compensate for the deficiency, without which the normal digestion of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates is impossible. No spice contains external digestive enzymes in the necessary replacement dosage. The role of spices is fundamentally different. They can have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antispasmodic, and stimulating (for their own secretion) effects, supporting the health of pancreatic tissue. Let's explore spices with potential for supporting the pancreas with gastroenterologist Klara Syuchugova.

Turmeric (Curcumin)

The most studied spice in the context of pancreatic health. It has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects by suppressing the activity of key pro-inflammatory molecules (NF-kB, COX-2), which play a role in the development of pancreatitis. There is data on the influence of curcumin on reducing markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in chronic pancreatitis.

It is important to remember that curcumin is poorly absorbed, so it is better to consume it with vegetable oils. Of course, there are no exact working dosages of turmeric for protecting the pancreas, so one should not rely solely on the spice or curcumin from capsules.

Ginger

It is traditionally used to improve digestion because it stimulates the secretion of digestive enzymes (amylase, lipase, proteases) by the pancreas and salivary glands due to gingerols. It has anti-nausea and antispasmodic effects, accelerates gastric emptying, which can alleviate discomfort associated with pancreatic diseases.

Fresh ginger in tea, grated in small amounts into sauces or side dishes, and ginger candies can be included in the diet to relieve symptoms.

Cumin and Coriander

They are often used together and have similar properties. The spices have antispasmodic, carminative, and choleretic effects. Cumin and coriander seeds can be added whole when stewing vegetables or used ground.

Restrictions

Not all spices are unequivocally beneficial for pancreatic issues. For example, capsaicin, which is actively used by doctors for burning mouth syndrome, can exacerbate pain in patients with chronic or acute pancreatitis. Garlic and onion can cause bloating and discomfort in people with sensitive gastrointestinal tracts.

Practical Recommendations

Before using any spices for therapeutic purposes, discuss it with a gastroenterologist, especially if a diagnosis of pancreatitis has been established. Use these spices as seasonings for food, but avoid extracts or dietary supplements containing these substances. Choose whole, quality spices, and grind them just before use to preserve their properties.

"It is important to remember that for the pancreas and its health, nutrition as a whole is important. It should be diverse, balanced, and contain sufficient amounts of proteins and healthy fats. Thanks to spices, your dishes, even the most familiar ones, can acquire a new, brighter flavor," says the doctor.

Spices are not a magic pill and certainly not an alternative to enzyme preparations in cases of exocrine insufficiency. Enzyme preparations are canceled or adjusted only by the treating physician based on tests and the patient's condition.
