Soaking Dirty Dishes Can Lead to Poisoning

The warm and humid environment creates ideal conditions for the rapid multiplication of pathogens.

Microbiologist Jason Tetro warned about the risks associated with soaking dirty dishes in the sink. According to him, the warm and humid environment creates ideal conditions for the rapid multiplication of bacteria. This is reported by the Daily Mail.

Data from Cardiff University confirms the dangers of kitchen sinks. During a study in 46 British homes, scientists took swabs from various surfaces and found that the concentration of bacteria in sinks exceeded that of other kitchen areas. Among the pathogens detected were Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Particularly concerning is the dishware left overnight in warm water: within a few hours, bacteria can multiply significantly. Even if dishes are not soaked but simply placed next to the sink, the problem is not resolved: microorganisms do not completely die in a dry environment. Additionally, food residues can attract insects, which spread microbes around the kitchen, noted public health expert Brian Labus.

Experts recommend washing dishes immediately after use or running the dishwasher. High water temperatures and a long washing cycle are more effective at destroying dangerous microorganisms, reducing the risk of food poisoning.
