Men's Cosmetics in Women's Care: What Can Be Borrowed Without Guilt

When the familiar cream suddenly runs out on the bathroom shelf, the hand reaches for men's cosmetics — first out of desperation, then out of curiosity. And an interesting discovery is made.

Not only do some products work just as well as the familiar women's jars and tubes, but sometimes they even turn out to be more functional and, frankly speaking, more honest in composition. Cosmetologist Irina Gorlova explained what can be taken without guilt — and without harming the skin.

Foam and Cleansing Gel

Men's cleansing products are often designed for thicker, oilier skin and active sebum management. They are simple and incredibly practical: they usually provide good lathering, clear cleansing, and minimal unnecessary fragrances. "If the skin is combination or prone to oiliness, such a gel can be even more convenient than the usual gentle product. The main thing is to avoid options with aggressive alcohol or excessive cooling effects, which are often added for a feeling of freshness," warns the expert.

Aftershave Balm

Here we need to be careful: the whole point is that men's aftershave balms are originally created to soothe irritated skin: they contain a lot of panthenol, aloe, allantoin, and sometimes niacinamide. Essentially, this is a light soothing cream with anti-inflammatory properties. After epilation, laser procedures, or simply during periods of skin sensitivity, such a product may work faster than the usual women's cream. The only condition is to choose versions again without alcohol.

SPF Products

Men's sunscreens (yes, they do exist!) are often made with a lighter formula — without shine and stickiness. On women's skin, they absorb faster than traditional ones, do not conflict with makeup, and do not give a mask effect. "If the feeling of a heavy SPF is irritating, a men's formula can be a successful find. There is no difference in protection: filters work the same for everyone, but the textures can sometimes differ significantly," says the cosmetologist.

Deodorants and Antiperspirants

Here it’s the simplest: the mechanism of action is exactly the same. The difference is often in the fragrance and intensity of the formula. Men's versions sometimes contain stronger antiperspirant components — which can be a plus in the heat or during intense workouts. If the scent is neutral or suitable, there are no contraindications. Sweat is not divided into male and female, and sweat glands work in the same way.

No-Frills Face Creams

Men's cosmetics are often packaged more simply — fewer promises about some eternal "radiance of youth" and more basic functions: hydration, barrier restoration, mattifying. The compositions often include the same glycerin, ceramides, hyaluronic acid. If the skin does not require complex actives, such a cream can be a universal option.
