Why the '8 Glasses Rule' May Harm Your Health

An excess of fluids can create additional strain on the body and worsen the course of chronic diseases.

Many are accustomed to relying on the rule of '8 glasses of water a day'; however, there is no universal standard. The body's need for fluids depends on weight, level of physical activity, climate, and even age. This was explained by cardiologist Elena Solomko to RBK-Ukraine, as reported by AOinform.

Is Excessive Water Consumption Safe?

According to the specialist, in hot weather or during intense workouts, the need for water sharply increases. At the same time, after the age of 50, the thirst mechanism gradually dulls, so people may not notice dehydration.

This is why older age is considered a risk factor for dehydration—a condition that can negatively affect the heart, blood pressure, and overall well-being.

However, excessive water consumption is not safe either. People with kidney or cardiovascular diseases, as well as those taking certain medications, particularly anti-inflammatory drugs, should be cautious.

An excess of fluids can create additional strain on the body and worsen the course of chronic diseases.

The cardiologist notes that plain water remains the best way to maintain balance without extra calories and caffeine. However, not everyone knows that about 20% of our fluid intake comes from food—soups, vegetables, and fruits. The rest can be provided by various beverages. Tea, coffee, or juices contribute to the overall water balance, as long as sugar limits are not exceeded.

In winter, many people drink less, and this is normal: the body naturally tries to conserve heat. If water 'doesn't go down,' the doctor advises not to force it, but to seek alternatives.

How to Maintain Hydration in Cold Weather:

  • Choose warm water or herbal teas, adding lemon or ginger;

  • Eat more first courses and juicy vegetables;

  • Monitor the color of your urine—light straw color indicates adequate hydration, while dark signals a lack of fluids;

  • Create simple habits, such as drinking a glass of water right after waking up to help the body gently 'start up.'

The main advice from the doctor is not to try to drink a conditional two liters at all costs. It is much more important to listen to your own body, relying on the feeling of thirst and overall condition.
