Not to Harm the Skin: Why It’s Important to Remove Makeup Properly

Dermatologists and cosmetologists emphasize that improper makeup removal can damage the skin barrier, accelerate the appearance of signs of aging, and cause irritation. Specialists recommend gentle techniques and suitable products to maintain skin health and avoid mechanical stress.

Removing makeup is an essential part of evening skincare. Simple vigorous wiping with a cotton pad can disrupt the skin's lipid barrier, increase dryness, and cause micro-inflammations, especially in the particularly delicate area around the eyes. To prevent negative consequences, dermatologists advise avoiding aggressive rubbing and selecting products that dissolve cosmetics rather than stretching the skin.

One recommended method is double cleansing: first, use a hydrophilic oil, cleansing balm, or oil-based formula to dissolve stubborn foundations, SPF protection, and makeup, and then a gentle gel or cream cleanser to remove residues and normalize the skin's pH. This two-step approach is considered the "gold standard" among specialists, as it ensures deep and gentle cleansing.

For those who prefer a simpler option, micellar water is commonly used: it contains microscopic molecules (micelles) that attract and capture makeup and dirt particles without requiring intense rubbing. However, dermatologists emphasize that micellar water is best used as the first step before final cleansing, rather than as a sole product.

Removing stubborn waterproof cosmetics requires special two-phase formulations or oils that effectively dissolve such products without excessive pressure on the skin. It is also important to follow the technique: for the delicate area around the eyes, specialists recommend moistening a cotton pad, gently pressing it against the closed eyelid for 20–30 seconds, and then carefully removing makeup in the direction of eyelash growth.

After removing makeup, wash with warm (not hot) water and a gentle cleanser to complete the process and prepare the skin for nighttime care. The final step is to lightly pat dry with a towel and apply a moisturizing cream or serum, which helps restore moisture balance.

...Professionals agree: makeup removal should be gentle, consistent, and suitable for the skin type and makeup style. Choosing quality products and the right technique will help protect the skin barrier, reduce irritation, and keep the skin healthy every day.
