As early as 2019, King Charles III received a troubling message. The royal family's name was linked to the dark dealings of Prince Andrew.
The Mail on Sunday revealed a shocking correspondence from an insider to the palace, reports the Daily Mail. The letter addressed to the king discussed the secret financial ties of the former Duke of York with millionaire financier David Rowland, who exploited royal connections for his own gain.
Messages that reached the newspaper paint a picture where Andrew — recently arrested on suspicion of abuses — was effectively briefing the banker on the palace's official matters. Since Prince Andrew had previously been implicated in a scandalous relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, it remains unclear whether confidential documents were passed to the criminal and whether the current king of Britain was aware of this.
Rowland, dubbed Andrew's "trusted treasurer," along with his son Jonathan, was seen in the prince's entourage during business trips (2001-2011) — from China to the post-Soviet outskirts. The prince shared profits from his trips with him, while the banker settled debts: £40,000 to ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, £1.5 million to Andrew himself in 2017.
In August 2019, the insider wrote to then-Prince of Wales through lawyers Farrer & Co, stating that "the duke places Rowland above family." A second letter was sent to the banker, with copies to Charles's secretary Clive Alderton and lawyer of Elizabeth II.
The palace is officially remaining silent — an investigation is underway. MPs are demanding the police examine the documents, and Minister Luke Pollard is calling for Andrew (eighth in line to the throne) to be removed. Epstein victim lawyer Gloria Allred urges Charles, William, and Kate to testify. However, Jonathan Rowland dismisses the claims, stating that it is "nonsense" and that his correspondence was stolen. The scandal is gaining momentum, threatening to cast a shadow over the crown.
