Psychiatrist Alexander Meshcheryakov provided recommendations on how to safely behave around people displaying oddities or signs of mental illness, especially in public places.
Random encounters with people suffering from mental disorders are not uncommon — on the street, in public transport, or in stores. As psychiatrist Alexander Meshcheryakov explains in his Telegram channel, the reactions of such individuals can be unpredictable: they may mumble, laugh loudly, curse, or exhibit aggression.
Meshcheryakov outlines five rules of conduct:
-
Do not engage in conversation, regardless of the topic.
-
Avoid direct eye contact and behave as inconspicuously as possible.
-
If the person is simply talking — listen calmly and do not get involved.
-
In case of physical activity or aggression — distance yourself and, if necessary, notify the police.
-
If a person with a mental disorder is in your home or at work, limit contact, maintain distance, and call emergency services if needed.
"At the slightest signs of aggression, do not risk your health — this should be handled by professionals," warns the doctor.
Additionally, psychiatrist Elena Tyavokina notes that depression is the most common mental illness: it affects about 20% of the world's population, or more than 300 million people. Schizophrenia, dementia, and bipolar disorder are also prevalent.
According to experts, signs of mental health include emotional stability, the ability to adequately assess situations, and maintain social contacts.
Behavior around a person demonstrating mental deviations requires caution and understanding: it is important to remain calm, avoid provocations, and seek professionals if necessary. Experts emphasize that the safety of those around should remain a priority.
