Don’t Overpay for Popular Resorts: Where to Go in 2026 for Cheaper and Better Options

There are alternatives to most popular destinations for an affordable yet vibrant travel experience.

In the so-called "Duplicate List" compiled by Airbnb, tourists are offered several options for peaceful places with beautiful views that can replace popular resorts in 2026. After all, hotel prices there have already reached unjustifiable heights, and crowds of tourists prevent a full enjoyment of the attractions.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the alternatives offer stunning views, cultural experiences, local cuisine, and attractions — all without the inflated prices and crowds found in more popular spots.

Trade Santorini for Altea

"Spanish Santorini" can be found in Altea, a historic coastal town located nine miles from the bustling Spanish city of Benidorm.

With its characteristic cobblestone streets and whitewashed buildings, this quiet place is increasingly attracting vacationers.

With endless sea views and charming accommodation options, Altea has many picturesque features of Santorini, but with less crowded streets and cheaper places to stay. Airbnb recommends traveling there from May to June for the best experience.

Leave Marbella for Denia

If Marbella is your dream destination, you can also find similar vibrancy in Denia, Spain. This charming port town on the Costa Blanca coast offers plenty of evenings filled with tapas and picturesque architecture for strolls — just like Marbella.

According to Airbnb, the best time to visit is from June to September.

Exchange Phuket for Koh Yao Noi

When traveling to Thailand, many travelers visit more popular islands like Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Phi Phi.

But Koh Yao Noi is a hidden gem with crystal-clear waters, limestone cliffs, and serene beaches.

Alternative to the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon attracts millions of visitors with its stunning viewpoints and hiking trails. However, vacationers looking to avoid a long and expensive flight to America can find something much closer to home in Europe.

Tolmin — a hidden gem in Slovenia, located in the Julian Alps, boasts turquoise rivers, deep gorges, and alpine valleys — an ideal place for long walks with breathtaking views. There are far fewer people here than at the Grand Canyon, and the exploration experience is just as rewarding.

Trade the Caribbean for Scotland

If you want to experience the taste of the Caribbean, Barra Island is a stunning gem in the Outer Hebrides. Instead of the typically popular islands of Skye or Mull, Airbnb recommends heading to Barra for its sandy beaches and blue waters. The island is also home to the world’s only beach with a scheduled runway — Traigh Mhor beach.

Leave Rome for Genoa

Just last year, reports emerged of unbearable crowds blocking famous sites in Rome, with throngs of tourists filling the streets and attractions. If you want to avoid the crowd, head to Genoa in Italy. This historic place has a maze of streets to explore and a lively waterfront. It resembles Rome in its culture and landscapes but without the crowds and inflated prices.

The best time to visit is from September to October.
