People with arthritis are more frequently diagnosed with early cognitive function impairments

The strongest correlation was observed among individuals with excess weight.

Chinese scientists have discovered a link between arthritis and an increased risk of early forms of memory and thinking decline that precede dementia. The study covered data from more than 6,500 middle-aged and elderly individuals. This is reported by Frontiers in Nutrition.

In people with arthritis, the likelihood of cognitive impairments was almost twice that of those without joint diseases. The strongest correlation was observed among individuals with excess weight and an unfavorable metabolic profile, including increased inflammation, as well as glucose and lipid metabolism disorders.

Researchers also found a significant role of depression as an intermediate factor. Depressive symptoms accounted for about 17 percent of the overall link between arthritis and cognitive function deterioration. The researchers suggested that chronic pain and inflammation in arthritis may provoke the development of depression, which further exacerbates the negative impact on the brain.

The authors of the study emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to treating patients with arthritis. In their opinion, controlling inflammation, correcting metabolic disorders, and early diagnosis of depression can reduce the risk of early cognitive decline.
