They pay over $40,000 and provide free meals: Antarctica has opened recruitment for jobs in 2026

Salaries start at £30,244 per year, and the employer covers accommodation and meal expenses.

If the January blues have hit hard and you dream of a radical change of scenery, the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) offers a unique opportunity: working at research stations in Antarctica in 2026, writes IFLScience.

Scientists and researchers are in demand, but they are also looking for technical and support staff: carpenters, cooks, plumbers, boat operators, divers, installation operators, and more. Job vacancies are available online on the BAS website, and listings will be updated until March 2026.

Salaries start at £30,244 (≈$41,285) per year, with all expenses for accommodation, meals, travel, special clothing, and training covered by the employer.

Antarctica is the only continent without a permanent population. The peak number of people at the stations reaches about 5,000 during the summer months (October-March) and drops to around 1,000 during the harsh winter.

BAS veterans emphasize that life on the continent is unique but demanding. Dan Mackenzie, the head of the Halley VI station, said:

"I started as a plumber, and now I manage the station. Anyone can try if they are willing to work hard."

Carpenter Phil Coolman added: "Working in Antarctica requires adaptability and teamwork, but it provides skills that can be used anywhere in the world."

Field assistant Jess Callaghan, who worked among penguins and seals, noted:

"This is a dream come true for those who love wildlife and seek adventure."
