Doctor: Women with a waist over 80 centimeters are at risk for diabetes

In men, this figure is over 94 centimeters.

A waist circumference over 80 cm in women and 94 cm in men may signal an increased risk of developing diabetes, said endocrinologist Ksenia Merkulova.

She explained that such measurements often indicate metabolic syndrome — a condition characterized by the accumulation of visceral fat, decreased tissue sensitivity to insulin, and elevated insulin levels in the blood, leading to disturbances in carbohydrate, lipid, and purine metabolism, as well as hypertension. According to her, this becomes a "trigger" for diabetes.

Merkulova noted that a key and primary sign of insulin resistance is indeed an increase in waist circumference, and to identify it, it is not necessary to undergo insulin tests or calculate HOMA and CARO indices. It is sufficient to measure the waist and determine the body mass index.
