Many believe that the kitchen sink is meant for any food scraps, but some foods can lead to serious clogs. Experts explain which foods should never be flushed down the drain to avoid calling a plumber.
Foods That Should Not Be Flushed Down the Sink
Fats and Oils
Fats solidify in pipes and create an impenetrable blockage. Leftover oil after frying should be poured into an unwanted container, allowed to cool, and then thrown in the trash.
Coffee Grounds
After brewing coffee, do not flush the grounds down the drain — they can clog pipes. The grounds can be dried and discarded, or used as fertilizer in the garden.
Eggshells
Eggshells clog pipes and can damage them. There are methods for using them in the garden, but at home, it is better to throw them in the trash.
Rice and Pasta
Even small amounts of grains or pasta swell in water and create clogs. Rinse them only through a sieve and do not flush them down the sink.
Flour
Wet flour turns into dough, which instantly clogs pipes. First, sweep the remnants into the trash, and then wash the dishes.
Following these rules helps keep the sewage system in working order and avoids costly repairs.
