Brown lipstick has triumphantly returned to the runways and streets — but no longer as a symbol of grunge or nostalgia for the supermodel era. Today, it is a complex, intellectual color that enhances the depth of the look.
To look relevant, it's important not to literally copy makeup from past photos, but to properly integrate the shade into modern aesthetics. Makeup artist Lyubov Brusnitsyna shared what to pay attention to.
Choose Complex Shades
Modern brown lipstick features a very complex and extensive palette. Shades with undertones work best: pink-brown, caramel, terracotta, cool cocoa, or muted mocha. "Such colors look expensive and lively, adapt to skin tone, and do not weigh down the face. The more complex the shade, the less it is associated with retro styling," says the expert.
Minimum Graphics, Maximum Softness
In the 90s, brown lipstick was often worn with a sharp outline and contrasting pencil. Today, this looks too graphic and heavy. The current option is blurred edges, creating an exciting and seductive effect of live lips. You can apply lipstick with your finger or blend it with a brush, creating a feeling of natural pigment rather than a thick layer.
Fresh Skin Is a Must
Brown shades instantly highlight tiredness and dryness of the skin. "Therefore, modern makeup with such lipstick always revolves around radiant, well-groomed skin: light foundation, highlighting the cheekbones, and minimal powder. The contrast between light skin and deep lips makes the look relevant and visually expensive," emphasizes the makeup artist.
Eyes — Simple and Natural Makeup
To avoid overloading the look, brown lipstick pairs best with neutral eye makeup. Soft eyeshadows in taupe shades, creamy textures, light mascara, and sometimes — completely bare eyelids. The calmer the upper part, the more modern the lower accent appears. Smoky eyes and heavy eyeliner rarely work here and require very precise balance.
Styling Makes All the Difference
Brown lipstick looks especially good in minimalist looks: concise silhouettes, simple jewelry, calm fabrics. It perfectly fits into the aesthetics of quiet luxury, modern minimalist boho, or intellectual minimalism.
