In some cases, the flu can manifest in severe forms and cause quite dangerous health problems.

The flu outbreak shows no signs of slowing down. Acute respiratory infections with COVID-19 have not disappeared with the arrival of winter either. Many do not perceive these illnesses as serious and do not consult a doctor. Sometimes there is indeed no compelling need for this. However, there are symptoms that indicate: you need urgent medical help.

Don’t Miss Them

Dr. Ian Morrison, chair of the General Practice Committee of the British Medical Association, notes that some strains of the flu can provoke more severe scenarios of the disease.

The first symptom indicating that you need medical help is difficulty breathing. If you find it hard to perform the most ordinary household tasks and speak long sentences, it’s better not to hesitate and consult specialists.

"This is a sign that you really have problems with your blood oxygen levels, and if this is unusual for you, then you need to see a doctor," explains Morrison.

Another alarming signal is severe chest pain. Yes, with the flu, your muscles may ache. However, if the discomfort becomes intense and does not subside for a long time, you need a thorough examination.

Finally, be sure to call a doctor if the usual flu symptoms are accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea, writes Metro.

"These are very common symptoms, and in most cases, they pass within 24–40 hours. But if you feel so bad that you can't go to the bathroom, then you need to see a doctor," emphasized the expert.

How to Treat at Home

Suppose you have contracted the flu, but your illness is not severe, and you have decided not to see a doctor. How should you treat yourself properly?

There are several basic rules.

  • Follow bed rest and try to rest as much as possible.

  • If you have a high fever and find it hard to bear, take fever-reducing medications.

  • Drink plenty of fluids.

Do masks protect against infection? Dr. Ian explains: they are more likely to make a person who has already contracted the illness less contagious to others. So, if you have flu symptoms, it’s better to wear a mask.

If you are sick with the flu, you can remain contagious for up to a week, starting from the day before symptoms appear. However, doctors warn: children and people with weakened immune systems remain contagious a little longer. The risk of transmitting the illness to others is especially high in the first five days.

To maximize the safety of those around you, cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.
