Storage Systems for Winter Clothes: So Jackets and Scarves Don’t Overrun the House

Winter is not only about snow, the aroma of tangerines and mulled wine, but also a constant struggle for space. This is because jackets are very bulky, and all family members accumulate many accessories: gloves, scarves, and hats. If a storage system is not thought out in advance, the house quickly feels chaotic: a pile of hats in the hallway and an overflowing closet. To make winter feel cozy, it’s enough to arrange everything correctly. Space organizer Ekaterina Efimova helped figure out how to do this.

One Person — One Hook

One of the most common mistakes is a shared hanger where all the jackets hang. The working rule: each family member should have their own storage point for outerwear. This can be:

  • an individual hook on the wall,

  • a separate section in the closet,

  • a personal basket for accessories.

"This logic reduces clutter: everyone is responsible only for their area," emphasizes our expert.

An Accessory Organizer is a Must-Have

Winter season = many small items: scarves, mittens, hats. These are the items that get lost most often. To prevent this, you can use:

  • a fabric organizer with pockets,

  • containers for each family member,

  • baskets in the closet,

  • hanging systems.

"This will help you get ready faster in the morning, find everything easily, and maintain visual order," notes Ekaterina.

Store Gloves and Mittens in Pairs

To avoid searching for a pair every morning, you can hang them on clips or connect them with a clamp.

You can make separate cases with labels or store each pair in a divider with compartments. This action takes just a minute, but saves a lot of nerves.

A Separate Shelf or Section for Frequently Used Items

Items you wear daily should be as accessible as possible. "Create separate active shelves. These should include daily scarves, hats, and shoes. The rest can be stored higher up, on other shelves or in separate organizers. This way, you free up space at the entrance and create order," explains the specialist.

Separate Boxes for Rarely Used Items

For example: festive scarves, insulated pants, spare hats, etc. The best placement for such categories is in labeled organizers ("children's winter clothes," "spare mittens"). In space organization, this is called labeling. It allows you not to look inside every time and find the needed items faster.

Winter Shoes Should Breathe

The main rules for winter storage: do not put shoes in bags and do not store them in closed boxes immediately after coming in. The best solution is a shoe tray + grid or dryer, as well as absorbent wipes or paper inside.

Aesthetics as Part of the System

Winter is a long season, especially in certain regions of Russia, so it’s important to choose materials that do not get dirty, are easy to wipe down, and do not absorb moisture. "It’s better to choose containers with solid bottoms and walls, sturdy hooks, and dividers. Such systems will not lose their appearance, and the space will look tidy," emphasizes Ekaterina.

Thanks to the right storage system:

  • jackets do not pile up,

  • scarves and mittens are always in pairs,

  • visual clutter does not arise,

  • morning preparation takes less than 5 minutes.

"Winter should not be associated with disorder. If you set up a convenient storage system once, the house stops being a warehouse and becomes a place of comfort again," concludes the space organizer.
