The washing machine has become an indispensable helper, but not everything that goes into the drum can withstand washing without consequences. Some familiar items get ruined instantly, and sometimes they can even damage the machine itself. Let’s figure out what definitely should not be washed in the machine.
1. Memory Foam Pillows
Memory foam pillows that conform to the shape of the neck and head can only be washed if specified on the label. Otherwise, they will deform and you'll have to buy new ones.
How to wash: thanks to the artificial hypoallergenic filling, these pillows stay clean longer. Small stains are best removed manually. If hand washing is indicated — immerse the pillow in a basin of water with a hypoallergenic liquid detergent without fragrances, gently shake it, and dry it in a ventilated area.
2. Clothes with Pet Hair
Washing clothes with pet hair only exacerbates the problem: the hair spreads onto the items, gets stuck in the drum, and can clog the filter.
How to wash: first, remove the hair with a lint roller or a damp rubber glove. If hair remains, iron the item on the lowest temperature setting, then wash according to the instructions on the label.
3. Bras
Especially push-up models quickly lose their shape when washed in a machine.
How to wash: it’s better to wash by hand in cold water with a small amount of delicate detergent, gently squeeze out excess water. If machine washing is necessary — fasten the bra, place it in a special bag for delicate items, and select a cold cycle. Only air dry, without a dryer or hairdryer.
4. Items with Embroidery or Lace
The washing machine can damage embellishments on clothing. Adhesive elements can scratch the drum, and lace can get caught on buttons or zippers of other items.
How to wash: by hand. If there is a label saying "dry clean only" — take the item to a professional cleaner and ask them to protect the protruding elements with a piece of fabric.
5. Very Large Items
A blanket or throw that barely fits in the machine should not be placed inside: the item won’t get clean, the drum will be overloaded, and there may be a breakdown of the machine.
How to wash: if possible, use a larger capacity machine or take the item to a dry cleaner.
6. Corduroy, Wool, and Cashmere
Delicate fabrics do not withstand machine washing: pilling, snags, and sometimes holes appear.
How to wash: it’s better to wash by hand. If the item bleeds, check this: dampen a small area and press a white cloth against it. If color transfers — do not wash, only dry cleaning remains.
