Gita Sprince's Exhibition 'Fusion' Reveals the Dialogue Between Ecofeminism and Aspazija's Poetry

The exhibition 'Fusion' by Gita Sprince, a student of the photo and video production department at the Latvian College of Culture, has opened in the summer house of Rainis and Aspazija in Jurmala, bringing together poetry and ecofeminism.

The exhibition 'Fusion' explores the relationship between women and nature from the perspective of ecofeminism, emphasizing the connection of women to nature and their relationship to patriarchal structures. The exhibition consists of four works: seven photographs of Latvian poets created using leaf shapes, a moss carpet with a video projection, as well as audio recordings of poems. The exhibition also features an essay by curator Amanda Kaufmane on Aspazija's poetry and the emergence of ecocriticism in Latvia.

The photo portraits reflect the image of a woman in nature, prompting us to contemplate resilience, cyclicality, and nature as a constant force, with which men are not in hierarchical relationships but are closely intertwined. As artist Gita Sprince notes: '“Fusion” visually represents the connection between women and nature, highlighting both the fragility of both and the ability to resist the perceptions imposed by society.'

The exhibition presents projections of manuscripts and interpretations of Aspazija's poems 'Dzeltens zars', 'Putekļu lietutiņš', 'Lūpu ķēju', revealing the poetess's connection to nature, symbolism, and the inner world of women. The exhibition also features poems by Madara Linna Evalde, Anna Auzina, Iveta Ratiniķe, Krista Anna Belševica, Evelina Anjane, and Greta Volkovich.

The exhibition is open for visits until March 1, 2026.
