Therapeutic Nail Polishes: Is There Real Benefit?

Therapeutic nail polishes are a popular product in pharmacies and cosmetic stores. They are positioned as a means to strengthen the nail plate, combat splitting, restore after fungal infections, and protect against external factors. But do such polishes really work, or is it just another marketing gimmick? We sought to clarify this with nail service master Elnaz Tylesova.

What’s in the Composition

Therapeutic polishes typically contain a combination of components: keratin or protein additives, vitamins (A, E, B7/biotin), ceramides, moisturizing agents (glycerin, panthenol), as well as substances with antibacterial or antifungal effects (for example, nitrofungin, amorolfine in antifungal preparations). Additionally, the formula may include film-forming resins that create a protective layer and reduce mechanical impact on the nail.

Strengthening and Protection

Many polishes can indeed temporarily improve the appearance of nails: smoothing the surface, preventing splitting, and protecting against mechanical damage. "The film-forming effect makes the plate less susceptible to cracks and brittleness. With regular use combined with proper care (nutrition, moisturizing the cuticle, avoiding aggressive manicure procedures), the external condition of the nails can improve," says our expert.

Nutrition and Restoration

Components like keratin and biotin can help strengthen the structure of the nail, but their effect is limited: the nail plate is a dead keratinized formation, and a significant part of the "nutrition" acts only on the surface. Elnaz states: "Real restoration takes time: the nail grows slowly (about 2–3 mm per month on the hands), so noticeable changes are seen after several months. In cases of vitamin deficiency, systemic correction (dietary supplements, balanced nutrition) will be more effective than local means."

Antifungal Action

The situation with therapeutic polishes for mycosis is more complicated. According to our expert, some pharmacy products contain antifungal substances (amorolfine, ciclopirox, etc.), and with regular use, they can help combat superficial forms of fungal infection. However, for deeply penetrating or advanced fungi, monotherapy with polish is often insufficient: a combination of systemic and local treatment, as well as medical supervision, is required. "Moreover, the effect depends on proper application — removing the polish, cleaning the surface, and following the course regimen," adds the nail service master.

Safety and Limitations

Therapeutic polishes have contraindications and side effects:

  • allergic reactions to components,

  • excessive dryness or irritation from frequent use of solvents and primers.

  • some additives and resins may mask the problem, improving appearance but not addressing the underlying causes of brittleness (for example, endocrine disorders, micronutrient deficiencies, chronic diseases),

  • not all products are equally effective, and in cosmetic polishes, therapeutic ingredients may be present in too low a concentration to provide a clinical effect.

Elnaz notes: "To achieve a real effect, it is important to choose products from trusted manufacturers and follow the instructions: apply to a clean, dry plate, adhere to the coverage change schedule, and course usage. If a fungal infection is suspected, it is better to consult a dermatologist or podiatrist who will prescribe tests and optimal therapy."

Moreover, a comprehensive approach is important — correcting nutrition, caring for the cuticle, and reducing traumatic factors — all of this will increase the chances of recovery.

Therapeutic nail polishes can provide real benefits: protecting the plate, improving appearance, and in some cases complementing therapy for superficial forms of fungus. However, their capabilities are limited. "For deep restoration and treatment of systemic causes of brittleness, a comprehensive approach and medical assessment are necessary. Choose products consciously, follow the instructions, and consult a specialist if in doubt," summarizes the expert.
