Most users charge their phones before bed and unplug them only in the morning. Does this harm the battery? Experts shared the details.
Experts have explained whether it is harmful to leave your smartphone charging all night.
There is much debate about whether it is okay to leave a smartphone charging overnight and whether it is harmful to the battery.
According to experts, it is harmless only in one case – if you use the original or certified charger, that is, the device from the smartphone manufacturer.
Modern smartphones are designed to protect the battery from overheating and over-discharging. Therefore, special built-in controllers monitor the temperature, current, and voltage. When the charge reaches 100%, the power supply is automatically stopped, and if the level drops below 95%, the process resumes in short cycles.
During fast charging, the temperature rises slightly, but it does not reach critical values.
According to specialists, the actual benefit of manually disconnecting the phone when it reaches 100% charge is minimal.
In fact, the only dangerous situation is charging during overheating — for example, at temperatures above 35 degrees. In such cases, the battery capacity can indeed decrease.
Additionally, one should not use counterfeit adapters. A study by the organization Electrical Safety First showed that 98% of cheap chargers failed basic tests. In particular, they often lack protective components and insulation, which can cause the voltage to spike from 5 to 240 volts — this can lead to a short circuit or damage the smartphone.
The danger depends not on the duration of charging, but on the type of charger. Experts recommend using only original adapters and avoiding overheating. Therefore, it is okay to leave your phone charging overnight, but only with the original adapter and at a normal ambient temperature.
