From Plate to Harmony: How to Alleviate Heaviness After Eating?

In the modern world, food often becomes not a pleasure but a routine — we rush to snack between tasks and forget that proper nutrition helps us feel energetic and happy. A constant feeling of heaviness after meals can create discomfort and fatigue.

Expert - Anna Dyomina, wellness master and nutritionist, spoke about how to restore lightness to the body and establish harmony with food.

Heaviness after eating is often related not to diseases but to our eating habits. "The body simply cannot cope with the volume or quality of food, especially if we eat in a state of stress or hurry."
The main factors causing discomfort:

  • Overeating: excessive food volume leads to overloading the digestive system.

  • Insufficient chewing of food: fast eating does not give the stomach a chance to properly process the food.

  • Late dinners: dinner closer to night can cause heaviness and difficulties with food absorption.

  • Suboptimal diet: a large amount of fried and fatty dishes, as well as a lack of fiber and water, worsen digestion.

Recommendations for Easing Digestion

  1. Eat mindfully: thorough chewing is the first step to effective digestion.

  2. Eat more often, but in smaller portions: divide your meals into 4–5 servings throughout the day.

  3. Choose a light dinner: prefer light dishes such as cottage cheese, steamed vegetables, or kefir 2–3 hours before bedtime.

  4. Don’t forget to drink water: on average, you should drink 30–40 ml of water per kilogram of your body weight per day.

  5. Add fiber to your diet: fresh fruits, vegetables, and grain products help improve stomach function.

  6. Avoid the "heavy trio": stop at fried, spicy, and sweet foods — they slow down digestion.

  7. Move after eating: a short walk of 15–20 minutes can significantly improve metabolism.

"It’s important not to lie down after eating, but to give the body time to digest. Also, do not eat based on emotions — a calm attitude towards food helps the body function in harmony," emphasizes Anna Dyomina.

If the feeling of discomfort after eating persists, you should consult a gastroenterologist. Anna Dyomina reminds us that heaviness can be a signal of hidden digestive problems that require professional diagnosis.

Conduct a small experiment: for a week, try to eat slowly, walk after meals, and avoid snacking based on emotions. After just a few days, you will feel how your body thanks you with lightness and comfort. By incorporating mindful eating into your life, you can not only improve the quality of your diet but also restore harmony to your body and soul.
