The neck is the most vulnerable part of the body at any time of the year, especially in winter: thin skin, minimal sebaceous glands, temperature fluctuations, and woolen collars that irritate the delicate surface. This is where wrinkles and dryness appear earlier than on the face. Most people take care of their necks as an afterthought — whatever is left over, they apply. But for the skin to remain smooth and firm, it needs a special winter regimen. Cosmetologist Irina Sozinova provided tips on what specifically needs to be done.
Don’t Use the Same Cream as for Your Face
In winter, the skin on the neck needs protection, not just hydration. Face creams, especially those with acids or retinol, can cause irritation in the wind and when in contact with fabrics. "It’s better to choose a separate care product — a thick one with ceramides, shea butter, squalane, or panthenol. Such formulas create a protective layer and prevent microcracks. If the skin is dry, apply the product twice a day — in the morning and evening after a shower," suggests the expert.
Don’t Rub or Stretch
The main mistake is vigorously applying cream up and down, as seen in advertisements. But the thin skin of the neck does not like mechanical impact. The correct method is gentle tapping with the palms, from the collarbones to the chin. Avoid harsh sponges and scrubs: in the cold, they only increase sensitivity and redness. Once a week, you can do a gentle enzyme peel to remove dead skin cells, but without aggression.
Don’t Wear Wool Against Bare Skin
A warm scarf is pleasant until itching and irritation begin. Wool fibers can become electrified and cause micro-injuries to the skin, leading to dryness and flaking. "It’s better to choose scarves with a lining made of cotton, cashmere, or silk. And don’t forget to wash them once a week — dust and skin particles accumulating on the fabric can cause inflammation and micro-inflammation. Even a light cotton collar under a sweater is a salvation for a sensitive neck," warns the cosmetologist.
Don’t Forget About Sun Protection
In winter, ultraviolet rays don’t take a vacation: reflecting off the snow, they enhance photoaging. The neck and décolletage under the collar receive less protection than the face but age faster. In the morning, apply a cream with SPF 30 at least on the exposed area — this reduces the risk of pigmentation. Lightweight formulas with minerals leave no white residue and don’t stain clothing.
Don’t Ignore Massage and Posture
The simplest anti-aging care is straightened shoulders. When the neck is elongated, the skin folds less, and blood circulation improves. Do self-massage: three minutes of gentle movements from the base of the neck upwards and from the center to the sides. Heating works well — a warm towel for five minutes before applying cream. The skin will absorb the active ingredients better, and the muscles will relax.
