No Swelling and Extra Wrinkles: The Best Way to Apply Eye Cream

The skin around the eyes is very delicate and thin. Therefore, the cream should be applied differently to the face and eyelids, especially delicately to the area around the eyes. If, of course, you want to keep your fresh and bright look for longer.

There are specialized cosmetic products for caring for the delicate skin around the eyes. But even here, the choice is vast: there are creams, serums, or gels that are moisturizing, rejuvenating, refreshing, and anti-edema. Among this variety, it is important to find the one that suits you — taking into account your natural or age-related features.

As dermatovenerologist and cosmetologist Anastasia Razbezhkina stated, most eye products should be used twice a day, preferably in the morning and evening. However, do not forget to check the instructions on the packaging before use and pay attention to individual issues.

"Do not apply a skincare product to the eyes if it contains active ingredients that cause irritation, such as acids or retinol. Such creams should be used strictly as directed. If you experience discomfort, stop using it and consult a specialist," warns Anastasia Razbezhkina.

The specialist advises storing eye cosmetics in a cool place. By the way, a light cooling effect also helps to reduce morning puffiness.

Four Mistakes in Applying Eye Cosmetics

The cosmetologist explained what mistakes women often make when using such creams.

  • Ineffectively distributing the product. This reduces the beneficial properties of the cream and negatively affects the condition of the skin.

  • Applying too much cream, which can cause puffiness under the eyes.

  • Distributing the product too close to the eyelashes. This leads to contact with the mucous membrane and, consequently, to tearing and painful sensations.

  • Using the wrong technique. For example, pressing too hard on the tissues, which can damage the delicate skin of the eyelids and accelerate the aging process.

How to Properly Apply Eye Cream: Seven Rules from a Cosmetologist

According to Anastasia Razbezhkina, this procedure is quite simple but still requires attention to detail. So, the cosmetologist recommends following this scheme.

  1. Before the main step, thoroughly prepare the skin. Treat it with your usual product and ensure that the face is dry and clean. Residues of makeup or other products can interfere with absorption.

  2. Take a small amount of cream, enough for a drop the size of half a grain of rice for each eye. Remember that the active ingredients can cause swelling.

  3. Apply the cream using your ring finger. It does not exert strong pressure on the eyelids, allowing you to distribute the product gently without pulling or damaging the skin.

  4. Apply the product along the orbital bone. This is done in a targeted manner — starting from the inner area of the lower arch and gradually moving to the outer corner of the eye. If the cream is suitable for the upper eyelid, distribute it under the brow without going onto the movable part.

  5. Do not smear the product. It is better to gently pat it in, lightly tapping for better absorption. However, do not pull or press on the skin.

  6. Avoid touching the eyelashes and especially the mucous membrane to prevent pain and irritation of the delicate tissues.

  7. Allow the product to fully absorb. Before the next procedure, for example, before applying makeup, wait 1-2 minutes for the cream to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin.

According to the doctor, correct use of eye cream helps maintain the health and youthfulness of the skin. However, mistakes in application not only negate the positive effect but also worsen the situation — provoking swelling, redness, and stretching of the skin.
