Why the Smartphone Makes Us Older: Experts' Opinion

We don’t part with our phones for a minute — checking messages, reading news, scrolling through feeds before bed. But for this habit, cosmetologists warn, the skin pays a high price. Smartphone radiation ages us faster than the sun.

Hidden Threat: How the Phone Affects the Skin

The smartphone has long become an extension of the hand — it’s hard to imagine even a day without it. But constant interaction with the screen is comparable to sunbathing under the midday sun without SPF.

The issue lies in HEV radiation — the blue light spectrum emitted by gadget screens. This light reduces the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, making the skin less elastic and hydrated. As a result, fine wrinkles and dryness appear, and over time — jowls.

According to experts, blue light even affects the skin around the eyes, increasing oxidative stress and provoking the appearance of dark circles. So the "panda effect" may not only be due to lack of sleep.

"Smartphone Neck" — A New Sign of the Times

When we look at our phones for long periods, our heads are tilted down, and the muscles of the face and neck are tense. This position worsens blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, causing the skin to lose tone and form creases.

That’s why cosmetologists are increasingly talking about a new term — “smartphone neck.”

How to Protect Yourself from “Blue Light”

There’s no need to panic — just adjust your habits a bit.

Limit screen time. It’s safe to use your phone for no more than two hours in a row; then take a break.

Don’t keep the gadget by your bed. Avoid looking at the screen before bed — it affects not only your skin but also the quality of your sleep.

Choose the right skincare. Use morning creams with vitamin C, niacinamide, flavonoids, and SPF — they will help the skin fight oxidative stress.

Support your chin with your hand. If you can’t give up your phone, at least change your position: supporting your chin will help prevent sagging skin.

And Finally

A mobile phone is not evil if used mindfully. Try to arrange a digital detox at least on weekends — your skin, eyes, and mood will thank you.
