If balconies and loggias were once considered merely an additional space for drying laundry, storing winter gear, and various junk, now they often serve as a relaxation zone, cozy and functional. However, not everyone is capable of organizing space effectively in minimal square meters. Interior designer and architect Maria Borovskaya admitted that even professionals sometimes view the balcony as a stumbling block.
She listed the main mistakes in the design of this mini-space and also explained how to avoid or rectify them.
1. Ignoring the Direction of the Sun
"The location of the balcony determines key aspects of its design. Southern and northern balconies need to be decorated differently, starting with plants for a mini-garden and ending with the overall concept of space organization. On the northern side, where light is scarce, it is undesirable to place dark furniture — it is better to choose light or bright options," says the expert. Meanwhile, on a balcony with plenty of sunlight, it is important to consider protection from active, and sometimes aggressive, rays. This will serve as a shield for potted live plants that prefer to be in the shade.
2. Inefficient Use of Space on a Small Balcony
It’s great when there is plenty of space — you can forget about limitations and buy everything you like. But if the balcony is small, a number of rules must be followed. Here are some useful ideas and tips to help create a stylish and comfortable relaxation area.
Climbing Plants and Vertical Structures
"Install a trellis or lattice on the wall so that the shoots can climb upwards. This will not only beautify your balcony but also create a pleasant effect of a green corner. Use the principle of vertical planting: this solution will save space while adding natural elements to the interior," continues the designer.
Shelves and Racks
Secure shelves on the walls for placing potted plants, lamps, and decorative items. This will help free up the floor and provide an interesting visual accent. Buy multifunctional racks that can serve both for storage and for decorating the interior. The combination of plants and useful items is particularly pleasing to the eye.
Hooks and Brackets
Hang hooks for folding chairs and loungers to easily store furniture when it's not needed. If you have a child's bicycle or scooter, you can use special brackets for their attachment. This approach will make the balcony more organized and tidy.
Functionality
You can equip hidden storage spaces, install boxes or cabinets under the shelves. In them, you will keep tools, fertilizers, and other necessary items. For a small balcony, choose convenient folding furniture — it won’t take up much space.
3. Neglecting Decor and Lighting
The balcony should be not only comfortable but also beautiful. Empty walls look boring, so it’s better to place paintings, mirrors, and other nice details on them. This will add coziness and visually expand the space. Lighting also adds charm to the area — it will make the balcony attractive in the evening. Since every square centimeter is valuable here, it is recommended to use wall-mounted outdoor lights or portable wireless models. Instead of bulky and bright floodlights, it’s better to hang several compact warm-spectrum light sources. Don’t forget about candles, which will bring a touch of romance to summer nights. Proper lighting will allow you to enjoy "balcony life" even after dark.
4. Improper Preparation of the Balcony for Winter
Before the cold season, it is important to prepare the balcony for the cold. First of all, we clean up. Clear the space of leaves, dirt, and debris to avoid rotting and mold formation. This is especially important if the balcony is not glazed. Next, take care of the flowers and furniture. Those that may not survive the winter should be covered with covers or moved to another room. Also, take care of the plants: perform autumn pruning and move them indoors.
Ensure that the loggia or balcony is reliably protected from moisture, snow, and drafts: windows and doors close tightly, and drainage holes are free from blockages so that moisture can drain. It would be good to insulate the space to make it comfortable even at sub-zero temperatures.
"Consider adding extra insulation, lay a mat or special covering on the floor to retain heat. Add garlands or thematic lighting to enjoy being here even in cold weather. Think about a portable heater or electric fireplace for maximum comfort," concludes Maria Borovskaya.
Mistakes in arranging the balcony can lead to disappointment. But they can be easily corrected with lighting, compact furniture, and live plants. This will transform the space into a cozy corner and allow you to fully realize its potential.
