Our smartphones are always nearby, and we are used to having the screen in sight so we don't miss a notification or message. But strangely enough, this simple action of placing the phone screen up makes us less attentive, more anxious, and can even be harmful to the device.
CNET has gathered five reasons why you should train yourself to place your phone screen down when you're not using it.
Fewer Temptations to Get Distracted
When the screen is constantly in view, any notification automatically grabs attention. Even if you don't unlock your phone, your brain still reacts, making it too easy to get distracted from, say, a conversation and switch to your smartphone.
Longer Battery Life
Every notification causes the screen to turn on for a few seconds. It may not sound alarming, but if there are dozens or even hundreds of such flashes in a day, the battery drains noticeably faster. When the phone is lying screen down, it doesn't respond to incoming notifications (this feature is available on almost all modern models).
It's a Sign of Politeness
Studies show that even a turned-off phone lying screen up reduces the quality of communication. People look into each other's eyes less and often lose the thread of the conversation.
The Phone Stops Dominating the Space
Our devices have become the center of attention even when we are not touching them. By placing it screen down, it stops being the main object in view, and you literally free up space for people, books, food, music, or anything else around you.
