Margarita Drobiazko and Povilas Vanagas have given figure skating audiences many bright emotions. Their duo, representing the Lithuanian national team, has long been one of the most beloved.
With each season, they approached the peaks of world sports and eventually realized that they wanted to be together not only on the ice but also in life, writes spleten.net.
Povilas had to spend a lot of time winning over his partner — Margarita long saw him only as a colleague. But beautiful courtship and sincere confession did their job: she opened her heart to new feelings.
The figure skaters lived side by side for more than a quarter of a century. However, their main dream always remained parenthood. And although the years passed and the coveted two lines did not appear, fate eventually gifted them a miracle: at 52, Drobiazko became a mother for the first time.
From an Accidental Partner to a Main Support
They met at CSKA. For Vanagas, Margarita immediately became a standard of mastery and a stimulus for development, while the figure skater herself regarded him skeptically, considering him inexperienced.
"The first thought when I saw him was: 'God, what kind of dancer is this?' But it turned out that Povilas is very talented — he grasped everything on the fly. I think it comes from his mother: she was a multiple champion of Lithuania," Drobiazko recalled.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the couple had the opportunity to compete under the Lithuanian flag. For Povilas, it was a matter of honor, while Margarita perceived the step more calmly.
The first serious results came only after a decade: at the turn of 1999–2000, they first climbed onto the podiums of the European and World Championships. Gold remained a dream, but for the audience, they were already among the brightest figure skaters.
The fifth Olympics — in Turin — became the concluding point in their sports career. But the love of the public did not disappear: the duo successfully continued to work in shows and on television. On the ice and in life, Vanagas became the most reliable support for Margarita.
From Jealousy to Confession
Their personal life did not unfold so simply. Margarita was temperamental, loved noisy companies, and experienced tumultuous romances, while Povilas gravitated towards calmness. However, stories about her affairs sometimes caused him jealousy.
In 1998, he decided to confess his feelings to her. Margarita needed a whole year to understand that this person was her destiny. There was little passion in their romance, but there was plenty of mutual respect and trust. Since then, they have been together for more than 25 years.
Wedding, Years of Waiting, and Long-Awaited Motherhood
After the confession, it came to the wedding — the marriage became an important moment in their story. But the topic of children remained painful for a long time.
"Almost everyone asked the same question: when will there be children? Sometimes they ask rudely, point-blank. I even said in an interview that I could adopt. And immediately I was bombarded with questions: 'Don't you want to give birth yourself?' Of course, I do. Children are given by God," Drobiazko shared.
And then the miracle happened: in 2024, 52-year-old Margarita became pregnant. Despite her age, she was in excellent shape, and Povilas surrounded her with care.
In December of the same year, their long-awaited daughter was born, whom they named with the rare name Nikolina.
The delivery went smoothly, and just a month later, the young mother returned to training, combining work in the show with her maternal duties.
Nikolina — the Little Favorite of the Family
The arrival of the girl brought joy not only to her parents but also to their friends, colleagues, and fans. The happy mom and dad do not hide the baby from the public.
The light-haired and smiling Nikolina has already won the love of the audience: Margarita eagerly shares photos and videos of her first steps, smiles, and cute gestures on social media. The posts invariably gather a lot of warm comments.
In December, the baby will turn one year old, and fans are eagerly awaiting new pictures of the heir of one of the most beautiful duos in the history of figure skating.
