Not Boring Gray: How the Most Fashionable Sweater of the Season Looks

This season, the item that stands out the most is something we usually overlook. The ordinary gray sweater or pullover has become a symbol of quiet chic: clean lines, noble mélange, soft texture. It works beautifully with any style and is suitable for any occasion — from a strict office to relaxed weekends. The secret lies in proportions, textures, and accents. Stylist Alina Lobanova provided tips on how to choose and wear it so that the gray sweater looks not just like a basic piece, but a fashionable statement.

Choose the Right Shade and Texture

Gray can be cool, warm, graphite, or pearlescent-light. A cool steel shade refreshes and highlights silver in jewelry. A warm mélange softens features and pairs well with beige coats. Dark graphite provides a striking contrast with white jeans and sneakers.

"Play with textures: a smooth knit looks minimalist under a jacket, while a loose fluffy yarn adds volume and romance. Fine cashmere works like a second skin and drapes beautifully in a front French tuck. If in doubt, go for a soft mélange of medium saturation — it’s versatile," says the expert.

Achieve a Fashionable Fit

A light oversized fit with a defined shoulder or dropped sleeve line is relevant. The length should be to mid-thigh, allowing for a loose fit, a half-tuck in front, or a belt over a skirt. The neckline can be round, boat, or V-shaped. Check the sleeves: slightly elongated cuffs create a relaxed vibe, while a roll-up gives an elegant wrist line. If you are shorter, choose a more compact length and add verticality with high-waisted pants. Tall girls can easily opt for voluminous models and wide pants at once.

Work with Proportions

Tucking in only the front "creates a waist" and elongates the legs. Wearing it fully untucked conveys a relaxed feel, especially with straight trousers with creases. A belt over the sweater shapes an hourglass silhouette and supports height with heels or platforms.

"With an outer layer, always consider the volume. Choose a thinner knit for a sheepskin coat, while a thicker sweater works well with a wide rectangular coat. A thin cashmere is perfect for a menswear-style blazer to keep the overall look interesting and expensive," explains the stylist.

How and What to Wear Today

Office: here, a fine-knit gray sweater, a dark blue blazer, gray trousers with creases, and loafers are ideal. Accessories include minimalist earrings and a watch. This results in quiet luxury without trying to impress through brand power. On weekends, a chunky mélange sweater, white straight jeans, a puffer jacket or trench coat, and sneakers or rugged boots will be appropriate. A beanie and a long scarf add interesting texture while keeping the look dynamic.

Fabric and Care

The perfect base includes merino, cashmere, alpaca, and their blends with cotton. Acrylic is acceptable in a small percentage for shape retention. Wash in a bag on a delicate cycle or by hand in cool water, dry flat away from heat sources, and store folded. This way, the loops won’t stretch, and the texture will remain soft.
