3 Ways to Wash a Blanket That Doesn’t Fit in the Washing Machine

A large blanket is comfort and coziness. But how do you wash it if the size simply doesn't allow you to do it in the washing machine?

Important: Don't Try to Stuff It!

Sometimes there is a temptation to literally stuff a blanket into the washing machine. If you have an old machine with a spinning mechanism, it's better not to do this. It can break both the machine and damage the blanket. Overloading the machine also leads to poor washing — the water won't be able to rinse the soap suds properly, and detergent will remain on the blanket.

Method 1: Use Cleaning or Dry Cleaning Services

Taking the blanket to a dry cleaner is a good option, especially for down blankets. It's not the cheapest method, but it is effective.

Before cleaning, carefully read the label on the blanket. It contains the manufacturer's care recommendations. Find out if your blanket can be cleaned with professional products at all.

Method 2: Use a Self-Service Laundromat

Laundromats have large washing machines designed for washing heavy fabrics. Blankets do not need to be washed too often, once every 2-3 months is sufficient.

We also strongly recommend using a duvet cover to keep the bedding clean for as long as possible.

A few tips for washing at the laundromat:

  • When washing, choose an additional rinse cycle. Large items are difficult to balance during the spin cycle, so rinsing may not be effective enough.

  • After washing, the blanket needs to be thoroughly dried to prevent mold from developing. Drying can take a long time, as the dense material absorbs a lot of moisture.

Method 3: Washing in the Bathtub

If the first two options are not suitable, you can wash the blanket in the bathtub:

  • Treat stains spot-wise.

  • Fill the bathtub with warm water and add laundry detergent.

  • Place the blanket in the water and gently stir. Leave it for 15-30 minutes.

  • Drain the dirty water and fill the bathtub with clean water. Rinse until all the detergent is washed out.

  • Air dry the blanket by laying it flat on a surface. Turn it occasionally for even drying.

  • You can place a towel underneath and change it when it becomes wet.

  • Drying may take one to two days.
