Beauty Without Harm: How Makeup, Eyelashes, and Cosmetology Affect Eye Health

The desire to be beautiful is natural, but some habits and procedures can cause real harm to the eyes. The specialist explains how to preserve vision without giving up cosmetics and salon procedures.

Expert: Victoria Balasanyan, Ophthalmologist

Dangers of Decorative Cosmetics

  • Microbes on Brushes and in Mascara. They provoke conjunctivitis, styes, and blepharitis.
  • Sleeping with Makeup. Clogging of the meibomian gland ducts disrupts the tear film and can cause a chalazion.
  • Glitter and Solid Pigments. Microtraumas to the cornea are especially dangerous for those who wear contact lenses.

Safety Rules:

  1. Change mascara every 3–6 months.
  2. Wash brushes and sponges at least once a week.
  3. Do not share cosmetics.
  4. Remove makeup every evening using dual-phase eye products.

Risks of Eyelash Extensions and Permanent Makeup

  • Eyelash Extensions. Fumes from the adhesive can cause chemical burns to the cornea, and incorrect movements can lead to micro-injuries and keratitis.
  • Permanent Makeup. Skin and mucosal trauma can lead to allergies, inflammation, eyelash loss, and even retinal detachment.

Scleral tattooing — coloring the white of the eye — is particularly dangerous and can lead to irreversible vision loss.

Cosmetological Procedures and the Eyes

  • Botox Injections. Errors in technique can cause ptosis or strabismus.
  • Laser Procedures. Exposure of the retina to the laser can cause thermal burns and irreversible vision loss.
  • Chemical Peels. Acids that come into contact with the eye can cause corneal burns and scarring of the conjunctiva.

How to Maintain Eye Health

  1. Quality Cosmetics and Hygiene. Never sleep with makeup on and change products in a timely manner.
  2. Professional Masters. Check knowledge of anatomy, adherence to sterility, and safety protocols.
  3. Regular Eye Examinations. Many pathologies are asymptomatic and are only detected at an early stage.

“The most expressive beauty is healthy eyes. No cosmetic procedure can provide the radiance of excellent vision,” says Victoria Balasanyan.
