Why Women Criticize Each Other: Reasons for Internal Misogyny

Female criticism and judgment of each other often have deep psychological roots. Experts explain that such behavior is formed from childhood under the influence of patriarchal stereotypes and social upbringing, rather than being a personal 'malice.'

No one can hate women like other women can. But this is not the fault of women themselves — it is the result of societal influence, where men are traditionally considered stronger and more important.

Expert: Marat Vakhitov, psychologist

“Misogyny is the hatred of women or discrimination based on gender. Often, women themselves are not aware that they are subject to internal misogyny,” explains Marat Vakhitov.

How Internal Misogyny Manifests

Dictate of Appearance
Women are imposed beauty and behavior standards from an early age — not to wear certain things, not to wear makeup, or, conversely, to always be attractive. “Try to remember the last time you judged another woman for her appearance? Even if only in your mind — this is a manifestation of internal misogyny,” notes the psychologist.

Comparison and Distancing
Women may devalue other women to emphasize their uniqueness: laughing at stereotypes, claiming to only be friends with men, neglecting 'feminine' interests and hobbies.

Control Over Sexuality
Attitudes towards sex are formed from childhood: boys are perceived as 'naturally active,' while girls are seen as those who need to be restricted and 'protected.' This pattern is passed down from generation to generation.

How to Combat Internal Misogyny

Acknowledging the problem is the first step. Gradually, it is important to change habits:

  • to be aware of your judgments and thoughts;
  • to learn to talk differently to women in life;
  • to accept and love yourself and other women as they are.

“Gradually, you will start to stop yourself from criticism and internal hostility, and this will become a habit. This way, you can change your attitude towards yourself and others,” concludes Marat Vakhitov.
