Microsoft Broke a Key Windows Feature

The OS recovery function in Windows 10 has been fixed — it was not working since October.

Microsoft allegedly accidentally broke an important feature of Windows 10 and has ignored it for almost six months. This was reported by Neowin.

Back in 2025, the media authors noticed that the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) stopped functioning correctly in Windows 10. It is necessary for restoring the operating system (OS) after failures. It turned out that Microsoft had been unable to fix the bug since autumn and only did so in March.

In mid-October, Microsoft ended full support for Windows 10 and transitioned users of the OS to an extended support program. Experts noted that around the same time, users of the system began to complain about the incorrect operation of Windows RE. The recovery environment, which is referred to as a key feature of Windows, broke due to an unknown error.

The problem was only resolved with the release of update KB5068164. It became available for users of Windows 10 versions 21H2 and 22H2. Microsoft clarified that about 250 megabytes of free disk space is required to install the update.

It was previously reported that on a number of computers running Windows 11, internet settings began to be deleted. The reset parameters can only be restored manually.
