NASA has canceled the Moon landing as part of the Artemis III mission.
NASA has canceled the landing of astronauts on the surface of the Moon, which was planned as part of the Artemis III mission. This was reported on the website of the American space agency.
Instead of landing on the Moon as part of the Artemis III mission, a demonstration of the docking of the crewed spacecraft Orion with one or two lunar landers is planned to take place in 2027 in low Earth orbit. If the Artemis III mission is successful, the landing of astronauts on the surface of Earth's natural satellite may occur as part of the Artemis IV or Artemis V missions, scheduled for 2028.
Earlier, NASA announced that the Space Launch System (SLS) heavy-lift rocket with the Orion spacecraft would be returned to the assembly facility.
On board the Orion spacecraft during the Artemis II mission will be NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The carrier with the spacecraft in the nose section is set to send the crew on a 10-day journey into deep space, flying past the Moon.
